LavaBit Relaunches

LavabitFriends, back in 2013, we told you about how Ladar Levison, founder of the encrypted email service Lavabit, took the defiant step of shutting down the company’s service rather than comply with a federal law enforcement request that could compromise its customers’ communications.  The FBI had sought access to the email account of one of Lavabit’s most prominent users — Edward Snowden. Levison had custody of his service’s SSL encryption key that could help the government obtain Snowden’s password. And though the feds insisted they were only after Snowden’s account, the key would have helped them obtain the credentials for other users as well.  Rather than undermine the trust and privacy of his users, Levison ended the company’s email service entirely, preventing the feds from getting access to emails stored on his servers. But the company’s users lost access to their accounts as well.  Levison, who became a hero of the privacy community for his tough stance, has spent the last three years trying to ensure he’ll never have to help the feds break into customer accounts again.

Lavabit is relaunching with a new architecture that fixes the SSL problem and includes other privacy-enhancing features as well, such as one that obscures the metadata on emails to prevent government agencies like the NSA and FBI from being able to find out with whom Lavabit users communicate. He’s also announcing plans to roll out end-to-end encryption later this year, which would give users an even more secure way to send email.  The new service addresses what has become a major fault line between tech companies and the government: the ability to demand backdoor access to customer data. Last year when the FBI sought access to an iPhone used by the San Bernardino shooter, Apple couldn’t get into the phone because the security scheme the company built in to the device prevented it from unlocking the phone without the shooter’s password. (Eventually, the FBI found another way to access the phone’s data, ending the dispute with Apple.)

Anonymous posted a message to President-elect Donald Trump…

anonymousFriends, Anonymous has wasted little time in posted a message to President-elect Donald Trump on their YouTube channel calling him — and the leaders of the world — out with a simple message: “Enough is enough…”  As compelling as the message may be, perhaps we should give the guy a chance.  100 days or so… just saying…

Old USB Drives Will Help Fight North Korean Brainwashing

flash_drivesLate last week, the New York-based Human Rights Foundation and the Silicon Valley nonprofit Forum 280 launched Flash Drives for Freedom, an initiative to collect USB flash drive donations from Americans and then ship those slices of silicon to North Korean defector groups. The Korean activist organizations, starting with the Seoul-based non-profit North Korean Strategy Center, will then fill the drives with Western and South Korean films and TV shows and smuggle them across the border into North Korea, where their contraband contents can break Kim Jong-un’s ban on all foreign media. The glimpse of the outside world that those TV shows and films provide is meant to dispel the ideology and illusions the Kim regime depends on to control its populace: that the outside world is poor, dangerous, hostile, and inferior to North Korea.

California gun owners brace for more bull$hit…

Obama-Gun-ConfiscationBOHICA…

California Senators have introduced anti-gun bills, Assembly Bill 1663 and Assembly Bill 1664 in the state Assembly.  Not to be outdone, Senators Isadore Hall and Steve Glazer introduced a similar bill, Senate Bill 880 which does roughly the same thing as AB 1663 and AB 1664, by redefining the current definition of “assault weapon” to include firearms that are affixed with a “bullet button.”  By redefining and expanding the meaning of the legal term “assault weapon,” these bills would dramatically expand the already byzantine legal definition of “assault weapon” and would ban millions of conventional firearms used  by hunters, target shooters, boy and girl scouts, and men and women who choose to own a firearm to defend themselves and their families.

In almost all instances, any one of these bills would require those who possess firearms equipped with a “bullet button” to register the firearm as an “assault weapons” or face confiscation, arrest, prosecution, and jail.  In almost all situations, gun owners would never be able to sell their firearms or pass them on as an inheritance.

Under each of these bills, the process of registering the firearm will require the owner to pay a fee and provide the following information to the state:

  • A description of the firearm and unique identifiers;
  • The date the firearm was acquired;
  • The name and address of the individual from whom, or business from which the firearm was acquired;
  • The registrant’s full name, address, telephone number, date of birth, height, weight, eye color, hair color, and;
  • California driver’s license number or California identification card number

Friends, if you’re reading this, own guns and live in Kalifornia (People’s Republic Of), take a couple minutes out of your day and let your representatives know how you feel.  This is the registration part; next comes the confiscation part…

Baltimore Orioles Executive Said It Well…

Baltimore Orioles COO John Angelos

Orioles’ COO John Angelos, the son of owner Peter Angelos, took to his own Twitter to deliver a powerful statement about the situation in Baltimore.

“The innocent working families of all backgrounds whose lives and dreams have been cut short by excessive violence, surveillance and other abuses of the Bill of Rights by government pay the true price, and ultimate price, one that far exceeds the importance of any kids’ game played tonight, or ever, at Camden Yards,” Angelos wrote. “We need to keep in mind people are suffering and dying around the U.S., and while we are thankful no one was injured at Camden Yards, there is a far bigger picture for poor Americans in Baltimore and everywhere who don’t have jobs and are losing economic, civil and legal rights, and this makes inconvenience at a ballgame irrelevant in light of the needless suffering government is inflicting upon ordinary Americans.”

Angelos comments came after Baltimore sports radio host Brett Hollander criticized the protestors, saying their measures were counterproductive. In Angelos’ long exchange with Hollander, the COO shared a thorough explanation on why tensions in the city were building even before Gray’s death ignited the riots.

“My greater source of personal concern, outrage and sympathy beyond this particular case is focused neither upon one night’s property damage nor upon the acts,” Angelos wrote, “but is focused rather upon the past four-decade period during which an American political elite have shipped middle-class and working-class jobs away from Baltimore and cities and towns around the U.S. to third-world dictatorships like China and others, plunged tens of millions of good, hard-working Americans into economic devastation, and then followed that action around the nation by diminishing every American’s civil rights protections in order to control an unfairly impoverished population living under an ever-declining standard of living and suffering at the butt end of an ever-more militarized and aggressive surveillance state.”

Damn Right!, and well John; Thanks for spreading the Voodoo!
